What the evidence says
- Company claim
HoverAir says the X1 PROMAX needs no controller or manual input: it tracks its subject with computer vision across 15 flight modes, including Follow, Orbit, Dolly Track and Bird's Eye, at up to 42 km/h, and lands on an outstretched palm. Manual flight through the phone app or a Beacon remote is optional.

HoverAir lists rear time-of-flight and vision sensors and downward sensing on the X1 PROMAX, and says obstacle detection works only in its Zoom Out, Dolly Track and Dolly Zoom modes, at up to 3 m/s. It is rated for 16 minutes of flight, weighs 192 g and is class C0 in the EU.

In an unsponsored test in Alaska at about -17 to -22 °C (January 2026), Jake Sloan found the X1 PROMAX tracks from behind and can track from the side or front in Dolly Track, with fewer follow angles than DJI's Neo 2. It got about 8–10 minutes per battery in the cold and, like the DJI drones, crashed fairly often without lasting damage; he rated its image quality the best of the three.

The Inertia's reviewer, after a couple of months of use (April 2026), found the tracking very impressive and the drone good at avoiding obstacles while filming. Once it stopped following and locked onto a patch of dirt, and in high wind it warned and landed itself, so he had to search for it.

On December 22, 2025, the FCC added drones and drone components produced outside the US to its Covered List. It said the restrictions apply to new device models and that retailers can keep selling models it had already authorized, which includes the X1 PROMAX.

In August 2026 the FCC said the authorization for HoverAir's newer VERSA had been granted in error, set it aside, ordered HoverAir to stop importing and selling the VERSA in the US, and said it was considering further action against HoverAir. The FCC's statement as reported names the VERSA only; it doesn't mention the X1 PROMAX.

The owner chooses a flight mode and launches the drone from the hand; it then flies and films on its own until it lands. Human involvement is left blank because none of the Index's options describes this.
